Who ever thought that sending electrical shocks through the brain could lead to medical breakthroughs? Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic, Harvard Medical School, and others, implemented this ‘Brain Pacemaker’ into 17 people suffering depression and tracked them for a year. They found dramatic improvements in their mood as well as social and occupational performance.
This ‘Brain Pacemaker’ was also effective in treating OCD, where a trial was conducted with 26 patients, monitored over a three year period. All of them showed improvement with their disorder.
As this technology is developed further, there is always a chance that the ‘Brain Pacemaker’ will be able to cure additions such as smoking and alcoholism.
