The bionic eye is now officially a reality; engineers have imprinted an electronic circuit and lights on a biologically safe contact lens. This bionic eye can be used to overlay computerized images onto ones everyday vision.
These contact lenses have the potential to be very useful for drivers and pilots, who could use them as a form of GPS, or even have weather conditions superimposed onto their vision. The bionic eye could also open up a whole new era of video gaming, through the ability to immerse the player into a virtual world. The lens could also be used along with sensors to monitor a persons health conditions, such as cholesterol level, and output the results to a computer.
Engineers believe that if the lens takes off, it could be developed further to incorporate miniature cameras that would be able to zoom in on something far away, providing ‘bionic vision’.
